Bejewelled: Curator’s Tour
May 11 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Join museum curator Mark J.R. Dennis as he introduces the history and tradition of the freemasons’ jewel to accompany the exhibition Bejewelled: Badges, Brotherhood and Identity.
In what many consider to be the largest collection of male jewellery in the world, freemasons continue to produce special badges called ‘jewels’. These jewels display the mysterious symbols that describe members’ interests, achievements and status within the fraternity. While some jewels were made from precious materials such as silver, gold and gem stones for princes, others have been fashioned from scrap metals by prisoners of war.
Our curator will bring you on an informal tour through the museum collection leading to Bejewelled: Badges, Brotherhood and Identity, which presents some of the finest and oldest examples of jewels in the world.
