Women and Freemasonry: The Centenary
Many people are still oblivious to the fact that there are women freemasons. In fact, The Order of Women Freemasons (originally known as the Honourable Fraternity of Antient Masonry) was formed on 5 June 1908. It was the first Grand Lodge founded in England to admit men and women as members on an equal basis. From its formation in 1717, the governing body of English freemasonry had restricted its membership to men but by the end of the 1800s women were campaigning for full civic and legal rights and wanted to join Masonic lodges too. Using fascinating documents, regalia and badges, this exhibition traces the history of their campaign and the spirited characters behind it.
Admission to the exhibition is free of charge and it is open 10am -5pm from 4th June -19th December 2008 every weekday.
